What it does

Space Weather Explorer is a 3D, mixed reality space weather visualization app that lets you:

  • View the latest solar imagery and video from GOES SUVI and SDO

  • Track geomagnetic storm intensity via the Planetary K Index (Kp)

  • Monitor solar flare activity using X-ray flux

  • Monitor proton flux (high-energy particle conditions)

  • Monitor electron flux (outer radiation belt intensity)

  • View the latest aurora forecast

  • Refresh and fetch new data with a single tap

Key Features

  • See the latest solar imagery and video from both the GOES Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI) and the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO).

  • Track the magnitude of geomatic storms using the Planetary K Index available from NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

  • Track solar flares using the X-ray flux data available from NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

  • Monitor high-energy particles and their potential impacts on satellites and space-based assets using proton flux data from NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

  • Monitor the intensity of the outer electron radiation belt using Electron Flux data from NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

  • Refresh and fetch new data from space with just a single tap.

Who it’s for

  • Space enthusiasts and educators.

  • Heliophysics researchers and analysts who want quick visual context for space weather.

  • Anyone monitoring space weather impacts on satellites and space-based assets.

  • Space weather experts working on space weather prediction and modelling.

FAQs

What is space weather?

1

Space weather refers to changing conditions in space, primarily driven by the Sun, that can affect Earth and near‑Earth environments. This includes solar flares, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and variations in solar wind that can trigger geomagnetic storms. Space weather matters because it can impact satellite operations, GPS accuracy, radio communications, and the electrical grid power systems on Earth.

What data sources does Space Weather Explorer use?

2

Space Weather Explorer uses real-time space weather data from NASA and NOAA, including NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) products. In the app, you can view solar imagery and video from GOES SUVI (Solar Ultraviolet Imager) and SDO (Solar Dynamics Observatory), the aurora (aka northern lights) forecast, and track key indices and flux measurements published through NOAA SWPC.

Does the app show solar flares in real time?

3

The app shows data and conditions as new measurements become available, and you can refresh to fetch updated data. Data takes time to reach us from space so “real time” in this context means the latest available NASA/NOAA updates, subject to the publication cadence and your network connection. This data is as ‘real time’ as possible when receiving information from space.

Which headsets/devices are supported?

4

Space Weather Explorer is available on Meta Quest via the Meta store and the XREAL Aura via the Google Play store listing. Space Weather Explorer is also available on other platforms to NASA, Space Force, and Air Force personnel. Contact us for instructions.

Yes. Space Weather Explorer a free app. Dauntless XR developed this app under an R&D contract with NASA, and made it available for space enthusiasts everywhere to learn about space weather and come up with new ways to predict things like CMEs and solar flares.

Both. Space Weather Explorer is designed to be approachable for education and public outreach (space enthusiasts, classrooms, self-guided learning) while still being useful for professional context where quick situational awareness is valuable (research, aerospace-adjacent teams, satellite/space systems stakeholders). It provides an immersive 3D way to explore and interpret commonly referenced space weather indicators.
